인물과 평가어의 관계 -조국, 진중권 관련 조선일보 댓글의 텍스트 분석-
The Co-Relation between ‘Tenor’ and ‘Language of Evaluation’ - Examining the Internet Comments of Cho Ku and Jin Joong Kwon

이 글은 체계기능언어학(Systemic Functional Linguistics)의 담화의미분석 방법 중 하나인 ‘평가어’를 해당담화의 ‘인물’ 관계(Tenor) 변수와 관련시켜서 분석해 보는 것이다. 이를 통해서 담화 참여자인 인물과 평가어가 어떤 유의미한 상관관계를 갖고 있는지 밝혀보는 게 목적이다. Thompson & Hunston(1999)에 따르면“평가어란 화자/저자가 이야기하고자 하는 개체 또는 명제에 대한 태도, 입장, 관점, 감정을 말하는 표현들을통칭하는 것이다.” 본고의 평가어 연구에서 사용한 언어 데이터는 이른바 ‘조국 사태(曺國 事態)’ 이후 조선일보 기사에 딸린인터넷 댓글 텍스트들이다. 본고의 목적을 달성하기 위해서 우리는 첫째로 한국어에 맞는 평가어 체계를 수립하기 위해서 개입 평가어, 태도 평가어, 강도 평가어의 어휘 목록을 제시해 보았다. 둘째로, 이에 근거하여 해당 댓글에 달린 평가어들을 개입, 태도, 강도 평가어로 나누어 분석해 보았다. 셋째로, 분석 결과, 조국 기사문댓글의 평가어 종류와 진중권 기사문 댓글의 평가어 종류가 분명한 차이를 보였으며, 이것이 해당 댓글을 쓰는댓글러들의 평가 성향을 그대로 반영해 주는 것으로 판단되었다. 좀 더 자세히 보면, 태도 평가어는 두 기사문 모두 행위 평가어가 감정 평가어나 정황 평가어보다 훨씬 많이 나타났다. 그러나 그 내용을 보면, 조국 기사문 댓글은 부적절, 기만(78), 무능(69), 불신(68), 특이(12) 평가어가 적절(1), 정직(0), 유능(0), 신뢰(0), 평범(0)보다 압도적으로 많았다. 그에 반해 진중권 기사문 댓글은적절(31), 정직(1), 유능(5), 신뢰(18)가 훨씬 많았고, 부적절(0), 기만(2), 무능(0), 불신(5), 특이(2) 평가어는상대적으로 적었다. 개입 평가어에서는 전자와 후자 모두에서 타인의 의견을 차단하는 단성적 목소리가 많았지만, 특히 후자의경우는 댓글러 자신의 주장을 외부 의견과 동일시하거나 외부 의견도 자신과 다르지 않다고 주장하는 다성적목소리가 30%를 차지한다는 점에서 특징이 있었다. 이점은 전자의 다성적 목소리가 7.8%밖에 되지 않는다는점에서 분명한 차이가 있다. 강도 평가어는 전자에서 세기어가 11.2%(523/59개)이고 후자가 32%(71/32개)로 나왔고, 초점어는 전자에서 1.3%(523/7개), 후자에서 5.6%(71/4개)가 나왔다. 두 인물 모두 강도 평가어 중 세기어의 선택이 높은 편이지만 상대적으로 후자에서 더 그 빈도가 높았다.
Abstract
This article examines the “language of evaluation (Appraisal)” in Systemic Functional Linguistics and its relationship to the “tenor” aspect of discourse. The aim is to show the connection between the speaker/author and their appraisal of the object or proposition being discussed. According to Thompson & Hunston (1999), appraisal refers to expressions that express the attitude, status, perspective, and emotions towards the topic being discussed. This paper studies the use of Appraisal in internet comments related to articles in the Chosun Ilbo during the “Cho Kuk incident.” To do so, the paper first established a vocabulary list of Engagement, Attitude, and Graduation to construct a Korean-suitable Appraisal system. Then, the Appraisal in the internet comments was analyzed and divided into three categories. The results showed a significant difference in the types of Appraisal between comments on the Cho Kuk articles and the Jin Joong-kwon articles, reflecting the evaluation tendencies of the commentators. Judgment was the most common Attitude expressed in both articles, with a higher frequency in the Cho Kuk article for words such as “impropriety (217),” “dishonest (78),” “incapacity (69)” and “trust (0).” In contrast, the Jin Joong-kwon articles had more instances of “propriety (31),” “honest (1),” “capacity (15)” and “trust (0).” Regarding Engagement, both articles had a high proportion of “monogloss” voices that rejected others’ opinions. However, the Jin Joong-kwon article had a higher proportion of “heterogloss” voices that equated commenters’ arguments with external opinions or claimed that external opinions were not different from them (30%) compared to the Cho Kuk article (7.8%). In terms of Graduation, the Cho Kuk article had a higher proportion of “Force” words (11.2%) compared to the Jin Joong-kwon article (32%), while the latter had a higher proportion of “Focus” words (5.6%) compared to the former (1.3%). Both articles had a high preference for “Force”words, but the Jin Joong-kwon article had a relatively higher proportion of “Focus” words.
