Abstract
This paper examines the period, nature, and transition process of Chungju walled town by analyzing previously excavated remains alongside the ongoing investigation of the presumed royal archive site within the fortress. This investigation is part of the Chungju walled town maintenance plan and has been conducted in three phases. The investigation uncovered eight building sites within a relatively small area. Among these, Building Sites 1 and 2 are particularly large, with diameters ranging between 200-250 cm, and are presumed to be part of the royal archive in Chungju, one of the four major royal archive sites of the Joseon Dynasty. Excavation revealed a total of five stratigraphic layers containing relics spanning from the Unified Silla period to the modern era, reflecting the chronological accumulation of remains. More than 300 artifacts were selected, with roof tiles accounting for over 50% of all artifacts. Notably, damaged wadang (roof-end tiles) and non-patterned ammakse (roof-end tiles) are prominent and suggest ritualistic practices. These features are comparable to the temple sites at Tapyeong-ri and Jangnaksa Temple. Additionally, line-patterned tiles and other tile motifs are very similar to those found at Cheongnyeongheon, Gimsaengsa Temple, and Uirimsa Temple. Furthermore, seven types of roof tiles have been identified, including those with inscriptions such as ‘官’, ‘舍’, ‘上日’, ‘義林寺’, ‘寺’, ‘弓+京’, ‘仐’, and ‘兀天’. The discovery of numerous ornate patterns suggests that the site housed high-status buildings. Beyond the presumed royal archive site, relics and remains from the late Unified Silla period to the late Goryeo period were also identified during the initial excavation of Chungju walled town. These findings suggest that the fortress and its surrounding areas likely functioned as a regional administrative center beginning in the Unified Silla period. The archaeological investigation of Chungju walled town must adopt a broader and more comprehensive perspective, rather than focusing solely on the royal archive, guest house, or fortress. It is also worth considering the possibility that this site may confirm the location of Jungwon-gyeong, a regional capital of the Silla Dynasty.
