This paper addresses the main challenges to the legal regulation of migration in Germanyand the wider European Union, which has adopted numerous rules for migration to thecontinent. In doing so, it shows that the design of legal rules, which are applied and respectedin practice effectively is no self-evident undertaking. Moreover, different areas of migrationlaw should be distinguished, which require sector-specific solutions.
