Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the activities and significance of the Catholic Priests’ Association for Justice (CPAJ) from the June Democratic Uprising in 1987 to the present. Following Korea’s democratization, the CPAJ expanded its focus from resistance against authoritarian regimes to active involvement in diverse social justice issues, including economic peace, economic inequality, and the right to life. When the CPAJ judged a government to be unjust, it launched resistance movements reminiscent of its earlier activities. These actions contributed to encouraging progressive initiatives among the Catholic hierarchy in Korea and helped to shape a progressive public image of the Catholic Church. However, the CPAJ has remained largely silent—or in some cases expressed conservative views—on critical issues such as gender and abortion. It has also failed to propose concrete positions or resistance in response to calls for internal reform within the Korean Catholic Church. These tendencies may stem from various factors, including the Church’s strict hierarchical order, a tendency to treat internal reform as a taboo in order to protect the CPAJ itself, the rigid boundary between the sacred and the secular, the priests’ self-definition of their roles, and a general avoidance of external criticism.
