Abstract
This article attempts to examine the religious activities of Taegeukgyo (太極敎), a minority denomination that was placed in a colonial situation in the mid-to-late 1930s, through songs of the genre called gasa (歌辭), a form of Korean lyrical verses. The seven songs of Taegeukgyo, which are attached to the investigation records of the Japanese colonial law enforcement authorities (the Prosecutor's Office documents), are valuable materials that provide a glimpse into the ideological thought and rituals of a minority religion that remains poorly understood. The Japanese law enforcement authorities saw that the prophetic songs of Taegeukgyo implied the restoration of Joseon's independence and national sovereignty and actively read the message of ‘Gyeryong (鷄龍)-Jeong Wang (鄭王)’ in a political sense. From the perspective of Japanese imperialism, Gyeryong-Jeong Wang's discourse was subject to sanctions under the security law that outlawed the denial of the Japanese colonial system. However, based on this discourse, it can be evaluated that what Taegeukgyo truly aimed to realize was an imaginary struggle for independence based on Jeonggamnok.
