Abstract
A great deal of attention has been given to networking as interests in organizational management and policy implementation increase. However, few questioned what generates and activates networking. To fill this gap, this study investigates determinants of networking by taking Burns and Stalker’s structural approach: mechanistic and organic structures. This study measures the level of an organic structure, or “organicness” based on authority, flexibility, trust, innovation, risk-takin, and red-tape, and examines how organicness influences the level of networking. An analysis on National Administrative Studies Project III shows that managers are likely to network more as they perceive their organizations more organic. This study suggests how to activate networking and expects future research for better understanding of networking.
