Abstract

By inquiring into the area which can be said to be the basic unit of this global age, this study attempts to analyze the formation and accumulation of local social capital in Korea and its characteristics. As many social scientists have defined it, social capital means the properties of a public and social structure that is comprised of trust, norms and horizontal network. The results of the accumulation and decline of social capital took on various forms such as the promotion of democracy, governance and fruits of economic development. However, from the perspective of political science, the most worthy of attention is the result of citizen participation. This study attempts to follow in detail the dynamics, characteristics and political implication regarding local social capital in key metropolitan cities in Korea such as Busan and Gwangju. The study methodology that was used to analyze the results was based on the secondary statistical data. As a result of the study, localized differences existed in the local social capital in Korea between Gwangju and Busan metropolitan cities and political and historical channels of social capital were found. Based on such findings, the study found various implications that can be used to accumulate local social capital in Korea.
