초록

This article aims to explain how married women's labour market participation is linked to perceived class identity through a quantitative approach, mainly based on cross-sectional logistic regression analyses, using the 3 years‘ datasets (2000, 2006 and 2012) from Korea Labor and Income Panel Study. The study found that there was class difference in the experiences of married women's labour market participation and that middle class mothers are more likely to stay at home even when their children reach primary school age and spend greater on child education compared to lower class mothers. This study strongly suggests that culturally constructed class-specific motherhood, emphasizing women as the main childcarers and managers of children's education, has contributed to the tendency of Korean mothers with younger dependent children being in the non-working sector and consequently, this aggravates the class differences in women's labor force participation and their children's education. Therefore, more attention needs to be paid to policy measurements addressing the class differences in Korean society.
