Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore children’s responses to postmodern picturebooks focusing on Voices in the Park and Black and White. Research participants are the 5 Grade 4 students and the 4 Grade 6 students. Qualitatively analyzed data were 2 picturebooks that they had read, their reading notes and each group’s discussions in classroom. Voices in the Park and Black and White have multiple stories in common. While Voices in the Park unfolds 4 stories one by one, Black and White contains 4 narratives simultaneously in one spread. Research participants read Voices in the Park first and then read Black and White. The results of analysis of children’s responses to two picturebooks are as follows:1. The new form of picturebooks with multiple narratives changes reader’s reading process. Children’s responses show that it is difficult to make rich meaning of the text by linear reading focusing on the verbal text. The radical change of narration leads the reader into more dynamic reading. It suggests the need of multiliteracy education. 2. In picturebook narrative, the verbal text and visual image seem to have switched roles. And this change is related with postmodern picturebook characteristics such as indeterminacy, non-linearity, ambiguity and openness. Furthermore, these features enhance the reader’s need to complete the story that paradoxically fulfill the desire of play by creating their own story. 3. The significance of visual image in the picturebook understanding is in keeping with its importance in our society. The visual image have potentiality of diverse meanings that may result in indeterminacy, uncertainty, ambiguity, openness etc. The visual image not only may enhance ambiguity but also play role as a key to reduce it. 4. Multiple narratives help understanding of the reality. They may be regard as a try for faithful representation of the reality. But paradoxically, they may probe its the impossibility. In other words, they tell that the reality is made up intertwined different voices. And more dynamic reading through divers pathways in the text is necessary to understand the reality.
