Abstract
This study analyzes the double structure of space, which is a feature of fantasy, based on DiCamillo’s The Tale of Despereaux. The novel does not deviate from the typical fantasy framework, and exhibits the dichotomous, universal, and cliché themes of good and evil, and light and darkness. However, DiCamillo draws deep symbolism from the conflicting worlds of light and darkness, develops cliché themes in an interesting way, and elicits rational interpretation through an imaginative point-of-view. The dark and underground space, which is set as a fantasy space in the novel, encourages us to find fundamental problems of life and to open our eyes to the reality. The space of light is a metaphor for love and forgiveness, while darkness represents hatred and betrayal. Despereaux recognizes what the real world is, and finds clues to solving problems in a fantasy space. The main characters are also able to find their inner self and learn how to forgive each other by having empathy for other characters who are in the fantasy space of darkness. Fantasy deviates from the boredom and limitations of the real world, and seeks to maximize imagination in fantasy space. The novel follows the order and rules of fantasy framework. It thus opens up the possibility of a rational interpretation of finding true love and hope.
