Abstract

The language of a literary work has an expressive function for reflecting emotion and sentiment of the work, as well as an informative function for conveying the contents. These functions apply to both narration and dialogue. However, the form of dialogue is different from that of narration. An essential distinction of dialogue style is ellipsis. Dialogue which takes place face-to-face has various causes for omitting. The priority to focus in translating dialogue is to make target readers understand identity of the characters and the contents of the work. The translator takes pains considering these factors to produce the target text conveying the appropriate meaning and the emotional effect. In this study, the present author will examine the cause of ellipsis in literary dialogue and the translational norms of the text, and infer the problems in the translation of the dialogue texts and give information on overcoming them or minimizing them. The result will offer a general guideline in translating the Korean literary dialogue into English. The texts for data analysis is ‘A Journey to Mujin’ written by Kim Seung-ok and two target texts. The target text 1 was translated by Jung Chong-wha and published in 1988 while the target text 2 was done by Kevin O’rourke and published in 1980. The findings of the analysis for the factors leading to ellipsis are as follows; firstly, ellipsis takes place in the case that the ellipsis dialogue is uttered previously in the discourse, secondly, in the case that deep structure and surface structure is different each other, thirdly, in the case that the ellipsis parts include the cognitive information that the speaker and the listener share. The texts were analysed in a descriptive way and the translation norms were defined. As the result, the translation strategies in the translation are categorized into supplement of the omission texts, communicative translation, shifting the perspective of the text, and leaving out of the ellipsis parts.
