본 연구는 그림책의 역동성을 출발점으로 삼아, 포스트모더니즘의 관점에서『지각대장 존』을 분석해보았다.『지각대장 존』의 뼈대에 해당되는 4개의 에피소드 와 열린 결말이라는 명시적 구조아래 감추어진 다양한 가능성을 탐색하여, 텍스트 를 지배하고 있는 이질적인 목소리와 그 의미를 밝혀보고자 하였다. 따라서 본 연 구는 비선형성과 불확정성, 모호함이라는 포스트모던 그림책의 특성에서 알 수 있 듯, 하나의 통합된 형태로 이야기를 정리하는 대신 파편의 형태로 산재해 있는 이 질적인 이야기에 주목하여, 좁게는『지각대장 존』에 대한 다양한 해석의 가능성을 탐색하고, 넓게는 이를 통해 그림책이 가진 역동성을 확인하고자 하였다. 분석결과,『지각대장 존』의 뼈대를 구성하는 4개의 에피소드와 열린 결말의 순환구조는 존과 교사, 자연과 문명의 대립관계를 명시적으로 보여주는 데 그치지 않고, 배움의 길과 그 길이 갖는 의미를 간접적으로 시사하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 존 버닝햄은 또 명확한 시간의 지표를 제시하지 않고, 환상과 현실의 경계 또 한 모호하게 처리하여 매우 분명한 것으로 여겨졌던 존과 교사의 대립관계 또한실재하는 현실이라기보다 존의 상상에 지나지 않을 가능성이 있음을 시사한다. 뿐 만 아니라, 4개의 에피소드를 통해 존과 교사의 대립관계 너머로, 자연과 어린이가 맺는 특별한 관계의 가능성 또한 시사한다. 이 점에서 보면,『지각대장 존』은 성인과 어린이의 대립관계 이상으로, 또 다른 ‘이야기가 서로를 반박하며 경쟁하는’ 포스트모던 그림책으로서의 면모를 보여준다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze John Patric NormanMcHennessy-the Boy Who Was Always Late by John Burningham in light ofpostmodernism. According to David Lewis’ viewpoint, that regards picturebookas a process, this study explores the potential of picturebook, John PatricNorman McHennessy-the Boy Who Was Always Late by repeated readings. John Patric Norman McHennessy-the Boy Who Was Always Late iscomposed of two distinct parts: the scenes depicting John’s walking in the fieldand four episodes. In this picturebook, Burningham shows a way of learningand its significance beyond the tension between child, John and teacher as anadult. John Burningham deals with these themes of learning somehow indirectlythrough open-ended conclusion and by blurring boundaries between fantasy andthe real. John Patric Norman McHennessy-the Boy Who Was Always Late canbe read as a postmodern picturebook in which there are diverse meanings,through which we can identify multiple pathways in the narrative, as well asambiguity, and non-resolution.
