Abstract

Focusing on the sense of place in picture book appreciation enables readers to keenly perceive and capture the subtle atmosphere of situations where events occur and the emotional changes of characters that are not explicitly conveyed through text. The sense of place provides practical support for bridging the gap between the reader and the literary text by fostering an understanding of the fictional world grounded in emotions tied to specific locations from the reader's own experiences. In picture books, the sense of place is conveyed through the interplay of text and visual imagery. Visually expressed senses of place serve as crucial cues, enabling readers to vividly experience and intuitively comprehend the emotions felt by characters within specific situations. This study explores the relationship between the sense of place and picture book appreciation, categorizing specific appreciation methods into three types: ‘Emergence and Divergence of the Sense of Place,’ ‘Expression of the Sense of Place through Colors Rather Than Lines,’ and ‘Representation of the Flow of Time through the Sense of Place.’ It is anticipated that future research on picture books utilizing the sense of place will become more active, opening new horizons for picture book appreciation.
