Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the materials that can be used in bibliotherapy. First, this study looked at the contemporary mourning stories from the exploration of various mourning theories and mourning narratives through theories and writings of Freud, Bowlby, Derrida, Barth, and White, as well as traditional Korean mourning ceremony. The search of them could suggest the mourning that modern society needs goes beyond the mourning that reflects the ideology of normality, and has been organized into mourning for connection and continuity, mourning for the community, and mourning for life that was not mourned. Next, picture books containing such stories were selected, five themes were reorganized to introduce picture books containing new mourning stories, and picture books were introduced by each topic. As results, ‘mourning connected and continuing through memory’, ‘mourning where the responsibility for the loss is in the social structure’, ‘mourning that welcomes death as a death itself’, ‘the transfer of memories, mourning of the community’, ‘mourning for unmourned death’ were organized as the mourning storytelling themes of the contemporary picture books. After introducing the stories of picture books by topic, how these stories can be utilized in bibliotherapy was suggested. The mourning stories reproduced through picture books can be used as therapeutic resources for all ages, and can be helpful to create deep insights into bibliotherapy approaches in the site of not only mourn at the individual level and solve problems, but also share grief and comfort with others, and reread and rewrote the mourning stories of the community.
