한국의 외국어 교육 담론과 인문학

외국어 교육은 문화와 언어, 의사소통 과정 등에 주목하는 분야이다. ‘인문학(humanities)’을 인간의 사상과 문화를 대상으로 하는 학문 분야라고 정의할 때, 외국어 교육의 이론과 주요 연구 대상들은 가장 인문학적인 여러 주제들과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 한국의 외국어 교육이 지나치게 시장의 논리만을 반영한 채 인문학적 가치를 외면하고 있다는 비판적 관점에서 출발하여 외국어 교육학과 관련된 이론과 실제, 교수법의 내용들이 현 시대에 한국의 인문학 연구의 주요 주제들에 기여할 수 있는 담론이 될 수 있는 몇 가지 방향들을 살펴보고자 하였다. 첫째로는 외국어 교수법의 역사를 고찰해보면서 도구적, 실용주의적 언어관이 팽배하고 있는 현시대 한국의 상황 속에서 인문학적 가치를 담은 외국어 교육에 대한 보완적 담론들이 필요하다는 점을 지적하고자 하였다. 둘째로는 ‘문화 교육’라는 광의의 개념이 외국어 학습과 병행될 때, 다른 학문 분야에서 다루는 문화 교육의 범위와 어떠한 점에서 특이성을 가지며, 교육적 초점은 어디로 향해야 하는지를 논의해보았다. 결론적으로 본 논문에서는 인문학적 가치를 담은 외국어 교육을 위해 한국 사회가 필요로 하는 인문학 담론들을 수용할 것과 방법론적 측면에서는 학제적 접근을 제안하였다.
Abstract
Humanities research, lecturing and writing, has become active recently in South Korea. Not only the humanities education in universities, but also interest among the general public has increased. Foreign language education is a field that focuses on new languages and cultures in the learning process and communication. When defined as a humanities discipline that targets human thought and culture, theory and reality of foreign language education and major research targets are closely associated with various subjects of humanities. To keep pace with globalization, the demand for foreign language education in Korea has increased. There are many private language institutions that teach TOEIC, TOEFL and HSK. Quantitative increase in foreign language schools does not lead to qualitative improvement of foreign language education. The purpose of this study is to ensure that foreign language education in Korea becomes a part of liberal arts education. In this paper, I investigate the “language, culture and communication” of foreign language education that meets the goals and objectives of liberal arts education in broader terms.
