Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the functions and characteristicsof the city of Edo, from the point of view that considers the Japanese EarlyModern Times as the period of formation and development of the Japanesesociety and of the said “Japanese system”. First, based on Japanese and foreign archives, the paper points out thefact that during the whole Early Modern period, the city of Edo wasperceived as the political center, i.e. the capital of Japan. Second, it clarifies the political and diplomatic functions of the“Edo-capital”. It then shows that the city of Edo, sheltering a millioninhabitants at the time and divided into samurai districts (“Bukechi”),merchants and craftsmen districts (“Chôninchi”) and religious buildingsdistricts (“Jishachi”), has seen its structure change after the great fire of1657 (Meireki 3), and that on the other hand the “Kyôho reform”(1716-1745) led by the shôgun Yoshimune stimulated the remodeling policyof the capital. Above the maintenance and changes of these “hard elements” (structuresand facilities), “soft elements” (life, culture, consciousness) also developed, and the “Edo-capital” went on accumulating the different functions of acapital.
