Abstract

This paper examines the problem of disease and death, which are inevitable topics of human life, through the Siberian shamanistic deity of Ongon (лечебный онгон), and examines the unique problem-solving method according to the shamanistic worldview. The reason for this attempt is that even in modern society where cutting-edge science has developed and become complex, this primitive method of shamanism is still actively operating within our psychology. The shamanistic evil spirits that are pointed out as the main cause of disease are mainly the souls of the dead who do not remain in the lower world but cross the boundary of the world and come to the world of the living. In particular, they are related to the vengeful spirits of those who were unjustly killed. Since vengeful spirits are based on the human soul, the way evil is personified in Ong-on is expressed in an unclear form, such as a small avatar or shadow of a person. Since ancient times, Siberian peoples have tried to solve the problem of suffering existing inside and outside of humans by offering sacrifices to appease evil spirits and vengeful spirits. The material substitute for this scapegoat is the disease ongon. The disease ongon was produced in three types depending on the nature of the evil spirit. First, the evil spirits that cause diseases among the natural spirits of the three worlds; second, the izykh (изых), which are animals that have made a contract with evil spirits and are given sacredness and become sacrificial lambs; and third, the ongon as an anthropomorphic container that temporarily or permanently contains the disease spirit. Siberian shamans appeased the vengeful spirits through healing rituals and, through the disease ongon, created a place of reconciliation for the evil actions of the clan community that had been inflicted on the deceased, thereby increasing the sense of belonging to the clan community and giving it religious stability.
