포스트모던 도시화와 비체 되기 - 젠더 ‘행하기(doing)’와 젠더 ‘허물기(undoing)’의 역동

오늘날 도시적인 삶의 전경은 달라지고 있다. 산업에서 탈산업 사회로, 온라인 소통에서 오프라인 소통으로의 전환과 함께 도시는 생산/재생산, 실재/가상, 공/사의 이분법적 원리를 넘어서고 있기 때문이다. 이와 함께 젠더체계도 재구성되고 있다. 이에 필자는 우선 오늘날 지식, 정보, 문화의 소비가 경제의 근간을 이루고 있는 우리 사회를 포스트모던 도시화가 진행되는 공간으로 명명하고 이 과정에서 기존의 이분법적 젠더는 ‘수행(doing)’됨과 동시에 ‘허물어(undoing)’지고 있음을 주장하고자 한다. 나아가 필자는 줄리아 크리스테바 그리고 주디스 버틀러와 함께 포스트모던 도시화 과정에서 본격적으로 가시화되는 젠더를 수행하면서도 허무는 여성, 여성성과 남성성의 경계를 넘나드는 여성을 ‘비체(abject)’로 명명하고자 한다. ‘비체’란 젠더 이분법을 위해 젠더 체계로부터 배제되어야 했던 존재방식으로서 특히 오늘날 젠더 구분의 경계를 넘나드는 여성 비체는 젠더 구분을 뚜렷하게 유지하려는 자들의 혐오 타겟이 된다.
Abstract
Today, the urban landscape is changing. Changing from industrial to postindustrial societies, from online communication to offline communication, the dichotomy of production/reproduction, reality/virtuality, public/private is dismantled. Along with this, the gender system is also deconstructed. In this paper, I first call it postmodern urbanization that is based on consume of knowledge, information and culture. And then, I argue that postmodern urbanization is not only ‘doing’ but also ‘undoing’ gender dichotomy. According to theory of Julia Kristeva and Judith Butler, it is the abject who is undoing gender dichotomy. The Abject is something that has to be existing for being excluded from the dual gender system. Especially, female Abject who crosses the boundaries of dichotomy becomes target of the hating who keeps it
