초록

본 논문은 최근 페미니즘의 유용성을 둘러싼 의혹과 시민사회의 논란에도 불구하고 도시연구에서 젠더 관점은 여전히 중요하고 필요함을 주장한다. 그 이유는 도시라는 물리적 실체와 관념이 젠더화된 이분법에 기반하고있음을 드러냄으로써 젠더 억압의 근원과 실체에 대한 이해를 심화할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 최근의 도시화와 자본축적이 여성노동의 유연화 및 재생산 노동의 유급노동화, 노동의 지구적 젠더분업을 기반으로 하여 작동하는 등젠더화된 과정은 도시화를 이해하는 데에 결정적이다. 따라서 페미니즘 연구는 일부 여성적 주제에 국한된 지엽적인 지식이 아니며, 젠더는 재생산 영역뿐만 아니라 다른 모든 과정에 깊숙이 개입한다. 이에 주류 도시담론은 젠더관점을 그 논의에 결합함으로써 설명력을 높일 수 있다. 본 논문의 목표는 이를 위한 이론적 자원을 검토하고 한국도시연구에 주는 함의를 추출하는 데에 있다. 특히 젠더가 다른 억압과 결합하는 양상을 분석함으로써 복잡한 권력의 지형도를 드러내는 개념적 도구인 교차성을 한국 도시연구에서 수용하는 것을 제안하고 관련된 쟁점을 탐색한다.

Abstract

The paper supports the necessity of gendered perspectives in contemporary urban studies in spiteof recent suspicions and contentions over the usefulness of feminism in society in general. One of the reasonsresides in the fact that the very concept and operation of city are based on gendered dichotomy and revealingthis can enhance the understanding of gender inequality. The gendered processes become even more criticalin recent urbanization in that neoliberal urbanization and globalization operate based on the flexiblizationof women labors, the massive switch of significant portions of reproductive labor, traditionally performedby women without payment, into paid works, and globalization of gendered divisions of labour. Feminism isnot confined to partial ‘women’ issues because gender has been deeply engaged in not only reproduction,typically known as women’s realm, but also all other parts of social functioning including production. Thismeans that urban studies need to incorporate gendered perspectives to enhance their accountability. Thepaper aims at exploring the theoretical resources for feminist urban studies and their implications to Koreanacademics. It in particular suggests them to articulate intersectionality, a conceptual tool to capture acomplicate topology of power through examining the way in which gender is combined with other kinds ofoppressions.
