Abstract

The purpose of this article focuses on the relations between the birth of metropolis and the transformation of inner landscape of women. What happened in women’s emotional structure when intimate and innermost psychic landscapes of women have been channelled into the circuit of exchange relations? Women’s self-expressions are constructed through consumption and fashion. Department stores are the central ones to them at metropolitan spaces. The department stores as the secularized cathedral stimulate the desire of women whose existence they themselves have not even been conscious of. They can express themselves by means of the politics of fashion and consumption. Those things structure the formation-processes of their gender identities. Thus conceived, women’s consumptional spaces is not merely those of luxury and wastefulness, but those of women’s self-actualizations.
