Abstract
The last works before the artist’s death have a special significance by revealing the consequences of the creative journey that she has led. This paper examines the works of Lee Ho-cheol with a focus on the concept of ‘late style’ of Edward Said. The style of lateness can be seen as a response to the fear and anxiety of death. Lee Ho-cheol expresses a unique sense of “being late” by the perception that death is not the “end” of existence but the “transition” to another world. This perception of death is evident through Lee Ho-cheol’s short stories collection, Here and there beyond the Stars, where historical figures from the underworld appear to talk about present times as well as their times. In addition, there are works that disclose secret documents of ‘Division’ and the Korean War, and these writings can be called literary archiving of history. Through this archiving, the artist conducted an exploration of the life of the Korean War refugees and the origin of ‘Division’. In another collection of works, The Time Gone and the Flowing People, the special experience of the artist who is a the Korean War refugee resonates with other diasporic experiences. In particular, works which consist of of autographical writings of Korean disporas show that the author is moving toward a new style of writing, free from the constraints of the genre of ‘fiction’. It can be named ‘writing as an annotation’ which can be named ‘late style’ in the sense that the commentary embraces reflections on life, society and history. In conclusion, Lee Ho-cheol’s style of later life is a writing that crosses the boundaries of this world and the underworld, reality and art, non-literature and literature, and material and interpretation, and inscribes comments and interpretations of the artist’s own life and the history of division on that boundary. This style of writing, which has internal discord and cracks, is the style of refugee writer’s later life.
