Abstract

Sojae 穌齋No Su-shin 盧守愼was a politician, scholar, and poet, who is said to have had play active roles during the reign of King Myŏngjong and King Sŏnjo. He passed first in the Civil Service Examination in 1543, serving as Government Official in Confucian Academy 典籍and Sixth Counsellor in the Office of Special Advisers 修撰and then became a librarian at Crown Prince Tutorial Office in the following year. After King Myŏngjong ascended to the throne, he was dismissed for his involvement in Literati Purge of 1545 乙巳士禍caused by Yun Hyŏngwŏn and Yi Ki, which made him exiled to Sunch'ŏn in 1547. To make matters works, he was transferred to Chindo Island in September of the same year since his offence was aggravated by the case of Writing on the Wall at Yanghae Post-station 良才驛壁書事件, and lived in exile for 19 years there. This paper examines the characteristics of No Su-shin’s poems written during his early exile. How did he embody the unstable feelings and changes in emotions? What characters or objects and poetic styles did he often employ when writing his literary works? Who did he exchanged poems with and what are these series of poems in regards to? What emotions are expressed and substantiated in his well-known Self-Elegy 自挽詩? mentioned above, this paper elucidates his poems written during his early exile with careful attention to these issues.
