Abstract

This study investigates the conception of junzi (君子) in The Book of Changes (Yijing, 易經) from the perspective of interpreting the classic through the classic itself (以經解經). To this end, it first examines the notion of junzi in The Book of Songs (Shijing, 詩經) and The Book of Documents (Shujing, 書經), and subsequently analyzes the appearances of junzi in the hexagram and line statements of the Yijing. Whereas previous scholarship, grounded primarily in the Yizhuan (易傳), has tended to understand junzi either as a purely moral personality or to reduce it to a hereditary noble or person of social status, this study focuses on the internal context and symbolic structure of the Yijing itself. In the Shijing, junzi appears variously as a person of social position, a moral personality, one who contains both aspects, and an ordinary man; in the Shujing, it generally denotes a person of social status, though moral qualities such as moderation and responsibility are also urged. Building on these tendencies, junzi in the Yijing can be classified into four types: (1) the morally virtuous person (乾卦, line 3), (2) the person of social position (解卦, line 5; 觀卦, line 1), (3) the person combining moral virtue and social position (謙卦, lines 1 and 3), and (4) the person combining social position and religiosity (同人卦, hexagram statement; 未濟卦, line 5). Furthermore, by reexamining the meanings of heng (亨) and zhen (貞), this study illuminates junzi as a religious agent who participates in sacrificial rites and divinatory practices. Through these analyses, junzi in the Yijing is typified as a moral agent, a figure of social standing, and a person in whom moral disposition or religious attributes are integrated upon the basis of social position. This, in turn, broadens the conceptual horizon of junzi in pre-Confucian literature and provides a foundation for reinterpreting the evolution of the junzi ideal in early Confucian thought.
