Abstract
This article delves into the methods employed by Seongho Yi Ik, a prominent Confucian intellectual in 18th century Joseon, to broaden his understanding of the world and its implications, with a particular emphasis on his seminal work, Seonghosaseol. This period witnessed a notable proliferation of encyclopedic writing in East Asia, spurred by the introduction of Chinese texts and translations of Western knowledge through China. Seonghosaseol, situated within this historical context, reflects Yi Ik's engagement with diverse intellectual currents, including Chinese archaeological studies, Western natural philosophy, and Catholicism, which significantly influenced his intellectual development. Central to Seonghosaseol is Yi Ik's critical examination of Neo-Confucianism, the predominant ideology of Joseon Korea. Through his writings, Yi Ik challenged the entrenched orthodoxy, aiming to dismantle the absolute authority it held and advocate for the creation of new knowledge. His endeavours were not confined to intellectual pursuits but extended to the realm of practical policymaking, as he sought to implement reforms at the national level. This study contributes to our understanding of encyclopedic knowledge production in East Asia during the 18th century, highlighting the complex motivations driving intellectuals like Yi Ik. By exploring Yi Ik's multidisciplinary approach and his engagement with diverse sources of knowledge, including traditional Confucian teachings, Chinese classics, and Western translations, we gain insights into the intricate interplay of socio-political factors shaping intellectual discourse in Joseon. Furthermore, this research aligns with the themes of the International Colloquium on 18th-19th Century East Asian Encyclopedic Knowledge Development. It addresses the overarching question of how East Asian intellectuals navigated and utilized various knowledge sources to expand their understanding of the world and contribute to socio-political reform. Specifically, it aligns with the axis examining the motivations and forms of encyclopedic knowledge production, offering a nuanced analysis of Yi Ik's intellectual pursuits within the broader context of Joseon's socio-political landscape and state reform initiatives.
