Abstract
This paper examines how the concept of 'Zhongshu (忠恕)', which is referred to as the epitome of Confucian empathy ethics, is treated in Im Yun-ji-dang's philosophy, and examines the context in which these philosophical characteristics of Im Yun-ji-dang can refine Confucian empathy ethics. The paper recognizes the self-centeredness that Zhongshu unintentionally produces as a limitation within the practice method of ‘Considering others by putting oneself in other people's positions (推己及人)’, and aims to consider an alternative reading within the philosophy of Joseon women. Thus, this paper focuses on two sections of Yunjidang Yugo, namely, Wu Dao Yī guan Shuo (吾道一貫說)’ and Chapter 13 of Zhongyong in Yunjidang Yugo. Although Im Yun-ji-da ng's reading method for Li-ren (里仁) 15 of The Analects, or Chapter 13 of Zhongyong relies heavily on the philosophy of Zhu-Xi (朱熹), the paper reveals the unique characteristics of Im Yun-ji-dang's philosophy. In other words, Im Yun-ji-dang emphasizes the equality of sages and Ordinary people, men and women in the process of reading Yi yi guan zhi (一以貫之) as the same nature rather than understanding it as a 'Zhongshu'. And in reading Chapter 13 of Zhongyong, we find a point of approaching empathy ethics through the point of revealing otherness in und erstanding Zhu-Xi's Ze ji (責己) as the meaning of self-blaming. By discussing these issues, the paper argues that gender and women's knowledge in the understanding of Confucianism of Joseon Dynasty women did not only passively accept the discussions of male Confucian scholars, but also appropriated them in their own way and created a difference. In addition, through the context of Im Yun-ji-dang's understanding of Zhongshu, the meaning of empathy that Zhongshu originally has is further elaborated, ther eby securing a basis for more effective discussion of Confucian empathy ethics.
