周時經 『대한국어문법』 異本과 그 成立過程

周時經의 초기 저작으로 알려진 『대한국어문법』(1906)은 오랫동안 六堂文庫本만이 잘 알려져 있었으며, 國立中央圖書館 소장의 필사본(청구기호: 古316-1)은 그다지 주목을 받지 못하고 있었다. 本稿는 먼저 이를 소개하여 두 가지 異本들의 차이점이나 수정양상을 살펴봄으로써 이들의 성립과정을 밝혀, 나아가 『대한국어문법』 자체의 성립과정이나 周時經의 연구상 발전과정 등에 관한 중요한 사실들을 정리한다. 國立中央圖書館本은 주시경 이외의 누군가가 六堂文庫本과 같은 판본의 책(A⁰本)을 보면서 베낀 필사본이며, 六堂文庫本 성립과정의 한 단계를 비교적 충실하게 보존하고 있다는 점에서 큰 가치를 지니고 있다. 이 글에서는 이를 이용하여 六堂文庫本에서 삭제․수정된 내용을 復元하고 그 내용적 변개에 대하여 고찰하거나, 六堂文庫本에 보이는 수정들을 A⁰版 이전의 수정(수정Ⅰ)과 이후의 수정(수정Ⅱ)으로 크게 나누어서 단계적 수정양상을 고찰하였다. 또한 國立中央圖書館本의 필사자는, 적어도 필사 시작 시점에서는 단순히 『대한국어문법』의 구체적 내용에 낯설었을뿐더러, 이 책의 “표기법” 자체가 주시경의 많은 고민이 담긴, 주시경 문법의 실천적인 “보기”로서 중요한 의미를 지닌다는 측면에 대해서는 잘 이해하지 못했던 것 같으며, 그만큼 周時經의 한글 및 국어 연구에서 먼 곳에 있었던 ‘일개의 일반 독자’에 지나지 않았을 것으로 추정된다. 필사 시기에 대해서는, 결정적인 증거는 없으나 『대한국어문법』의 집필․출판과 거의 동시대였을 것으로 보이며, 만약에 그렇다면 國立中央圖書館本은 ‘그 당시 사람들의 표기법에 관한 인식’이나 ‘그들과 周時經 사이의 거리감’, ‘『대한국어문법』이 어떻게 읽혔는지’ 등, 『대한국어문법』의 시대적 배경을 보여줄 수 있는 자료로서도 큰 가치를 지닐 가능성이 있다. 國立中央圖書館本은 周時經과 『대한국어문법』에 대해, 이처럼 재조명해 주고 있다.
Abstract
While Taihankwukeomwunpep (1906), known as one of Cwusikyeong's initial works, has long been known for the copy owned by Ywuktangmwunkwo (六堂文庫, Ywuktangmwunkwo-pon, hereafter), the copy owned by the National Museum of Korea (Call Number: 古316-1) has been almost unnoticed. This work introduces the latter and identifies the relationship between the two copies by examining their differences and modifications. In addition, the significant facts such as the formation of Taihankwukeomwunpep, and Cwusikyeong's development in his research on Korean are identified. In a nutshell, the copy owned by the National Museum of Korea was a manuscript rewritten by a person other than Cwusikyeong, using the same edition (A⁰ edition) with Ywuktangmwunkwo-pon. This copy is valuable in that it faithfully preserves a stage of the production of Ywuktangmwunkwo-pon. Utilizing the copy of the National Museum of Korea, we restore deletions and corrections of Ywuktangmwunkwo-pon, investigate the alterations in contents, and examine the modification in Ywuktangmwunkwo-pon by dividing stages into before A⁰ edition and after A⁰ edition. Furthermore, it is likely that the transcriber, at least at the point of starting transcribing, not only were not familiar with the very contents of Taihankwukeomwunpep, but also did not understand the fact that the orthography adopted in Taihankwukeomwunpep itself contained Cwusikyeong's concern about Korean grammar, and the fact that it had significant meaning as a practical example of Cwusikyeong's opinion on Korean grammar. The transcriber, therefore, is presumed to be a layman who stayed faraway from Cwusikyeong's grammar research. Although there is no decisive evidence, the age of transcription seems to be the same era as the writing and publication of Taihankwukeomwunpep. If so, the copy owned by the National Museum of Korea has its value as the evidence to show the historical background of Taihankwukeomwunpep such as the recognition of the public on orthography at the time, the distance between the public and Cwusikyeong, how the book was read, and so on. Thus, the copy owned by the National Museum of Korea reinvents Cwusikyeong and Taihankwukeomwunpep.
