20세기 초중반 한국어학의 사상적 면모 : 주시경과 게봉우를 중심으로

이 연구에서는 주시경이 지은 『국어문법』과 게봉우가 지은 『조선말의 되어진 법』에 드러난 민족주의적 면모와 일반언어학적 면모를 밝히고자 한다. 이 두 저서는 각각 20세기 초반과 20세기 중반에 집필한 것으로서, 일반언어학적 원리를 바탕으로 한국어의 주체성을 강조하고자 한 저자의 의지가 각 저서에 공통적으로 드러나 있다. 주시경은 고유어 문법 용어를 고안하여 한국어 문법을 분석하였으며, ‘말’과 ‘일’의 관계를 통하여 기호학적 개념을 발전시켰다. 게봉우는 역사비교언어학의 방법론을 참고하여 한국어 단어의 어원을 고유어 안에서 찾고자 노력하였다. 이들의 연구 성과 자체는 비록 후대에 충실히 계승되지 못하였으나, 이 두 학자가 지녔던 언어관과 언어 사상은 그 의의가 충분히 인정된다.
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the nationalistic and general linguistic features of the linguistic writings of Gugeomunbeop(Korean Grammar) written by Ju Si-gyeong and Joseonmareui Doeeojin Beop(The Etymology of Korean Language) written by Ge Bong-u. These two writings, written in early and middle 20th Century, emphasizes the subjectivity of Korean language, based on general linguistic principles. Ju Si-gyeong analysed the Korean grammar with his own linguistic terms stemed from original Korean words, while he developed the semiotic ideas with the relationship of ‘mal’(word) and ‘il’(matter). Ge Bong-u tried to find the etymology of Korean words only in the original Korean words, consulting the methodology of historical comparative linguistics. The standpoint and thought of these two linguists must be considerably recognised, although their linguistic study results themselves are not wholly succeeded.
