Abstract

The aim of this paper is to answer two questions raised in relation to the formation of reduced restrictive relative clauses in Spanish. First, we try to find out the reason why it is not allowed to make reduced relative clauses using the present participle(in Spanish, gerund), whereas it is easily allowed to formreduced relative clauses using the past participle. Second, we try to clarify why English, unlike Spanish, easily allows to form reduced relative clauses using the present participle. Regarding the first question, based on the fact that the main role of relative clauses is to modify the antecedent, we argue that the past participle has adjectival properties and can therefore modify the antecedent when the reduction takes place, but the present participle, which lacks adjectival properties, cannot. Regarding the second question, based on the fact that in English it is common for the present participle to modify a noun, we claim that English present participle has adjectival properties and this makes it possible to shorten relative clauses. In addition, we argue that the difference in the range of tense meanings that the present progressive tense can refer to is deeply related to the possibility of forming reduced relative clauses using the present participle. In English, where the present progressive tense has a wide range of tense meanings, the probability of reduction becomes high, whereas in Spanish, where the present progressive tense has a narrow one, the probability of reduction becomes low. Finally, we show that data from Italian and Brazilian Portuguese support our analysis.
