영화 <코초치>는 심부름을 하던 중에 말(馬)을 잃어버린 두 소년의 일화를 통해 멕시코 치와와주를 거점으로 살아가는 라라무리족의 삶과 문화를 담은 작품이다. 평화로운 자연과 시골 마을을 배경으로 전개되는 두 소년의 짧은 모험은 이 작품을 성장 영화로 분류하기에 충분하다. 그러나 그 과정에 포함된 라라무리족의 문화는 정복과 식민의 역사적 흔적과 더불어 지배 문화와 원주민 문화의 충돌 등 다양한 층위의 문제의식을 내포하고 있다. 본 연구는 두 소년을 통해 재현된 라라무리족의 문화와 지배 문화의 갈등 구조를 분석함으로써 <코초치>가 멕시코 혁명 이후 지식인과 정치권력이 멕시코인의 정체성을 재구성하면서 은폐하고 제거한 멕시코의 다종족성을 재확인하는 작품임을 밝히고 있다. 또한 이 작품이 원주민 문화의 고유성과 독립성을 강조함과 동시에 원주민 문화에 대한 신비주의적 관점을 벗어나고 있음에도 불구하고 원주민 문화를 멕시코라는 국민국가와 지배 문화의 내부로 끌어들이고자 하는 욕망을 내포하고 있음을 지적한다.
Abstract
"Cochochi" is a simple story of two Raramuri children in search of their lost horse on the way of an errand for their grandfather. But this film, beyond the coming-of-age film, problematizes the clash between the dominant and indigenous cultures, showing historical scar of the era of colonization. This study shows that "Cochochi" recovers the erased and forgotten multi-ethnicity by political power and intellectuals as a fundamental part of Mexico's national identity. In fact, the film seems to move away from the mystical vision of the dominant culture towards the indigenous culture, highlighting the importance of the peculiar uniqueness of the Raramuri culture. However, there is a doubt that the work shows the desire to introduce the Raramuri culture into the dominant culture under the national framework of Mexico.
