19세기에 스페인으로부터 독립한 이후 콜롬비아 정치는 엘리트 지식인들이 중심이 되어 보수당과 자유당으로 분리되었다. 거대 양당의 과두정치로 인한 권력 다툼이 주를 이루었던 콜롬비아는 20세기를 지나며 정치적으로 그리고 사회적으로도 큰 변화를 맞이하게 된다. 특히 1948년 4월 9일에는 당시 차기 대선에서 당선이 유력했던 자유당 대통령 후보 호르헤 엘리에세르 가이딴(Jorge Eliécer Gaitán)이 수도 보고타에서 피살당하는 사건이 발생했다. ‘보고따소(또는 보고타 사태)’라고 불리는 이 사건을 계기로 분노한 민중이 일으킨 폭력사태는 전국적으로 확산되어 1960년대 초반까지 수많은 사상자를 낸 ‘라 비올렌시아’로 이어진다. 본 연구는 콜롬비아에서 보고따소 이후 20세기 중후반 국민 역사 교육을 통해 국가적인 차원에서 정치적 이데올로기가 반영된 학교 교육을 전략적으로 이용했던 사실을 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 특히 1950년대부터 1960년대까지는 공통의 역사를 공유하는 하나의 공동체를 만들기 위해 '조국과 민족'을 강조하는 국민 역사 교육이 이루어졌으며, 이후 학교 역사 교재에서도 정치·사회적으로 부정적인 요소는 모두 삭제되었다는 사실에 주목한다. 그리고 그 과정에서 콜롬비아의 오랜 갈등의 역사가 지워지고 침묵되고 있었음을 밝힌다.
Abstract
Since independence in the 19th century, Colombia had been dominated by an oligarchy of elite intellectuals from the conservative and liberal parties, would undergo major political and social changes in the 20th century. In particular, on 9 April 1948, Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, the Liberal Party's presidential candidate for the next presidential election, was murdered in Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia, sparking a wave of violence that spread across the country and led to La Violencia, a period of violence that lasted until the early 1960s and resulted in many deaths. This study aims to critically examine the strategic use of schooling to reflect political ideology at the national level through the teaching of Homeland History in Colombia in the mid-to-late 20th century after the Bogotazo. In particular, it shows that from the 1950s to the 1960s, ethnic history education emphasised ‘fatherland and ethnicity’ in order to create a united community with a common history, and that all politically and socially negative elements were subsequently erased from school history textbooks. In this process, it reveals that Colombia's long history of conflict has been erased and silenced.
