(Beatty and Weber 2006; Ramanna and Watts 2012 등).

Abstract

Prior to K-IFRS, goodwill accounting was fairly straightforward and required little involvement from the auditor. The issuance of K-IFRS in 2011, however, dramatically changed the process of accounting for goodwill. K-IFRS ended goodwill amortization and required annual impairment testing. The introduction of ongoing impairment monitoring significantly changed the role of the auditor related to goodwill accounting. The auditor must now devote significant time to the testing of this accounting, ensuring that management has properly assessed and if necessary, written down goodwill. Given that prior literature has shown that management has the incentive to manipulate this accounting(Beatty and Weber 2006; Ramanna and Watts 2012), it is critical for the external auditor to remain independent as higher levels of independence should result in enhanced auditor judgement and a related lower risk of goodwill being manipulated by management. The combination of subjective judgements and potential management manipulation suggests an analysis of goodwill impairments can provide important insights into the role of auditor independence. The potential for diminished independence in the auditor-client relationship has long been a concern of regulators, particularly in the presence of a longer auditor-client relationship. On the one hand, developing client-specific knowledge may be crucial if auditors are to detect and deter delay of goodwill impairment loss by clients. Over time, auditors gain a better understanding of their client's business. On the other hand, if a long-run association with the same client reduces auditor independence, auditor with longer tenure may be less vigilant about delay of avoid goodwill impairment loss by their clients. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the auditor-client relationship(auditor tenure) impacts to the accounting for goodwill impairments. In order to properly test for an association between auditor tenure and auditor independence in the assessment of goodwill, I must identify a sample of observations where a goodwill impairment most likely should have been recorded. Consistent with prior literature(Ramanna and Watts 2012), I use market to book ratio less than one to identify when account's books are overvalued and the company has a high probability of experiencing a goodwill impairment. I use a sample of 348 companies with a market to nook ratio less than one fore two consecutive years. I find the evidence that there is a significant positive association between auditor tenure and the recognition of goodwill impairment in settings in which goodwill is likely to be impaired. Also I find that the positive relationship between auditor tenure and recognition of goodwill impairment is consistent with non-big4 and Non-expert auditor sub samples. This paper extends academic literature that examines goodwill accounting. Prior studies highlight company incentives to avoid goodwill write-offs and reveal the need for an effective external monitor(Watts 2003; Beatty and Weber 2006). This paper examines the impact of one of the most important external monitors(auditors) on the goodwill assessment process. This paper provides meaningful insights into this prevalent issue faced by auditor.
