Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the impact of managerial discretion in determining goodwill impairment on the vale relevance of goodwill under K-IFRS. The adoption of K-IFRS introduced impairment-only approach which requires at least annual impairment test for acquired goodwill instead of amortizing goodwill over a specified period. This approach may provide more relevant and useful information on goodwill and impairment losses, whereby managers convey their private information about firms’ future performance to the market. However, managers are also likely to abuse the approach for opportunistic purposes such as earnings management. This paper investigates whether discretionary unrecognized impairment losses convey differential information content compared to the control group. Using samples which report positive goodwill on the balance sheet from 2011 to 2019, we find the following results. First, the value relevance of goodwill dose not appear differently between goodwill impairer and non-impairer. Second, the discretionary non-impairer presents lower value relevance of goodwill compared to the control groups. We interpret the results that managerial discretion to delay impairment loss recognition reflects managerial opportunistic intention to inflate earnings.
