Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of worker gender diversity on earnings management and to show that the positive effects of worker gender diversity suppress managers’ opportunistic behavior. It will also show that worker gender diversity interacts with internal and external monitoring mechanisms to curb managerial opportunism by verifying that this relationship is strengthened in the presence of effective internal and external monitoring bodies. There is a significant negative relationship between worker gender diversity and earnings management, suggesting that the positive effects of female workers by gender diversity suppress managers’ earnings management. In other words, the conservative and prudent attitude, active communication, and high ethical standards of female workers in financial decisions contribute to suppressing managers’ frauds through various management participation methods. Further, this relationship is strengthened in companies with effective monitoring bodies (Big 4 auditors, audit committees, and high outside directors on board). As a result, worker gender diversity has been shown to interact with internal and external monitoring bodies in preventing and monitoring managers’ frauds. This study suggests that worker gender diversity should be increased and that the effective monitoring mechanisms should be established in order to enhance the management transparency.
