Abstract

[Purpose]This study aims to examine the effect of gender diversity of board of directors on credit rating and rating disagreement in terms of corporate governance. [Methodology]We test whether the ratio or presence of female CEOs and female executives is associated with credit rating and credit rating disagreement for companies listed on the KOSPI and the KOSDAQ market from 2013 to 2021. We use two-step analysis using instrument variable to control endogeneity that may exist between the gender diversity of the board and the credit ratings of the company. [Findings]We find that the ratio of female CEOs or female executives is higher, or that if female CEOs or female executives exist, the credit rating is higher and the credit rating disagreement is less. The results of propensity score matching based on the presence of female executives are similar. [Implications]This study expands the scope of literature of corporate valuation or corporate bond issuance market by explaining the impact of gender diversity on credit rating and credit rating disagreement from the perspective of corporate governance. In addition, this study has a contribution to the expansion of the scope of women-related research by linking it with governance structure at the time when the mandatory appointment of female executives began.
