Abstract

This study aimed to identify distinct literacy interest profiles among young children and explore the relationship between maternal literacy guidance and profile classification. Two dimensions of emergent literacy interest (reading and writing) and two dimentions of conventional literacy interest (reading and writing) were considered. A total of 113 children aged 6, along with their mothers, participated in the study. The children underwent a battery of standardized reading skill tests, while the mothers completed their own literacy guidance inventory and a demographic questionnaire that surveyed the child’s literacy interest. The data were analyzed using latent profile analysis and multinomial logistic regression. Latent profile analyses revealed four profiles: (1) High literacy interest, (2) Low literacy interest, (3) Moderate literacy interest, and (4) Weak conventional reading interest. Multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that it is not the mothers’ literacy teaching but rather literacy exposure that was related to children's profile classifications. The profiles underscored the significant heterogeneity in early literacy interest and emphasized the importance of maternal literacy exposure activities such as reading aloud or engaging in wordplay.
