Abstract
This study investigated the relative effects of children’s literacy interest and mothers’ literacy behavior on young children’s emergent literacy skill. Participants included 250 four-year-old children and their mothers residing in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, who completed an online survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression. Results showed that children's emergent literacy skill, literacy interest, and mothers’ literacy behavior were all above the median level. Significant positive correlations were found among the three variables. Hierarchical regression revealed that mothers’ literacy behavior explained emergent literacy more strongly than children's literacy interest. Among the subvariables, writing support and writing interest were key predictors. These findings highlight the combined influence of affective and environmental factors on emergent literacy and suggest the need for integrated approaches and effective early literacy support strategies.
