Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions and attitudes of parents from Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families residing in Vietnam toward their children's Korean language education. While previous research has primarily focused on Korean language education for immigrant women and their children living in Korea, this study seeks to explore children's Korean learning experiences and parental practices from a broader perspective, taking into account the context of living abroad and the diversity of family structures. To this end, seven families with varying characteristics were selected through purposive sampling. Basic data were collected through multiplechoice and open-ended survey responses, and complementary face-toface and online interviews were conducted to further interpret the open-ended items. The results revealed that parents perceived Korean language education as important for various reasons, including identity formation, maintaining family bonds, and preparation for higher education. In particular, in families where children demonstrated higher levels of Korean language proficiency, it was found that Korean was used as the primary language of communication at home, the children had early exposure to Korean, and the parent who made educational decisions recognized the importance of Korean language education. In addition, even when parents showed a strong willingness to support their child’s education, some families faced difficulties in practice due to limitations in the educational environment. This study provides a multifaceted analysis of the current status of Korean language education among various types of Korean–Vietnamese multicultural families residing in Vietnam, and its findings may serve as a foundational resource for establishing future educational directions for children in similar contexts, as well as for subsequent research.
