Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of flipped learning on the academic self-efficacy of foreign undergraduate students and to explore educational implications for enhancing their academic achievement. To this end, the study designed a three-phase flipped learning model—pre-learning, main learning, and extended learning— suitable for international undergraduates. Six topics were selected and taught over 16 weeks, with each topic covered over two weeks in four class sessions. The pre-learning involved interdisciplinary, convergent online content that combined diverse and expansive fields. Based on this, the main learning included topic analysis and selection for discussions, debates, and presentations. The extended learning involved additional activities to expand learning, quizzes, and reflective journals. Changes in academic self-efficacy were assessed through 23 items across three factors: task difficulty, self-regulatory efficacy, and self-confidence. The results showed that students were interested in moderately challenging tasks and felt a sense of achievement through overcoming them. They also had high self-regulatory efficacy by effectively using strategies and techniques to manage their own learning in order to achieve their goals. However, the self-confidence factor was generally low, because students tended to assess their Korean language skills strictly compared to native speakers’ pronunciation and expressive abilities. Despite this, the 85 participating international undergraduates had advanced Korean proficiency, communicated effectively with native speakers, achieved their self-set goals, and evaluated their academic performance positively. However, they held high standards regarding natural and accurate pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, aiming for native-like fluency. These psychological and emotional factors could be addressed through educational measures that provide individual students with support, encouragement, and positive feedback from instructors and peers. The results of this study will be able to serve as a basis for designing and operating flipped learning classes that enhance the academic achievement of international undergraduate students.
