Abstract

This study analyzes the current curriculum and teaching materials for multicultural students from an intercultural perspective to propose improvements in Korean cultural education, given the increasing multicultural nature of Korean society. Multicultural students, who include children of international marriages, late-entry immigrant children, and children of foreign families, face significant academic and psychological challenges due to linguistic and cultural differences. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of education that helps multicultural students maintain their identities while understanding and interacting with both Korean and foreign cultures. The analysis of curricula, teaching materials, and programs for multicultural students reveals that current Korean cultural education primarily focuses on transmitting content centered on Korean culture and lacks sufficient reflection of an intercultural perspective. Specifically, teaching materials that incorporate cultural diversity and tailored activities for learners are insufficient, and opportunities for cultural comparison and interaction are limited. To address these issues, it is necessary to expand intercultural approaches, develop customized teaching materials that consider students' cultural backgrounds and learning levels, and strengthen the intercultural competencies of educators. Sharing successful cases of multicultural education will also help establish a sustainable educational framework. This study discusses the positive impacts of intercultural education on the self-identity and adaptation of multicultural students to Korean society. It aims to contribute to the establishment of an educational foundation that facilitates the successful integration of multicultural students as members of Korean society, fostering a harmonious and positive transition to a multicultural society.
