Abstract
Self-injurious behavior in students with disabilities is a severebehavioral disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectsof time-out and functional communication training on the self-injuriousbehavior(head hitting) of student with intellectual disabilities. Theparticipants of the study was one elementary student with intellectualdisabilities. The intervention was implemented in the special educationclassroom. The ABAC design was used to investigate the effectiveness ofthe intervention. The findings of the study were as follows. First, Thetime-out and functional communication training was decreased thefrequency of self-injurious behavior(head hitting). Second, Theintervention effects was maintained and follow-up probe was veryeffective. The findings of the study were discussed in the perspective oftime-out and functional communication training and self-injuriousbehavior for students with disabilities, and can be used to plan andimplement successful reduction of self-injurious behavior of students withdisabilities.
