Abstract
Among Korea’s methods of building a fortress, the method of building “terraced inner walls” at regular distances in width and height in order to form a layered structure is a characteristic feature of Joseon’s fortresses, such as Yeonhaeeupseong Walled Town and Yeongjinboseong Fortress. During the Joseon period, a new method of building the terraced inner walls of fortresses (called oebyeok seokchuk naetak in Korean), which consisted in building near vertical stone walls to protect the outer wall, was adopted. In other words, to compensate for structural defects, stone walls were built to a certain width in order to cover the outer wall, while an inner wall was built with earth and sand to reinforce the outer wall. Therefore, this method of building terraced inner walls was definitely applied to fortresses all around the country, including those on the south coast of Korea, around 1430 (the 12th year of the reign of King Sejong), and it was still being used in the sixteenth century. Such a method of expanding the width of a fortress by building a terraced inner wall can be also seen in some of the earthen-walled fortress built on the south coast during the mid-modern period of Korea. Terraced inner walls consisting of two to three tiers inside the fortress can also be seen in those built in the Middle Ages. These terraced inner walls are believed to have been built to accommodate and protect the people during the period of the struggle against the Mongols around the mid-thirteenth century. As such, it can be inferred that the construction of terraced inner walls at fortresses on the south coast of Korea was introduced around the middle of the thirteenth century. Terraced inner walls were built to enable a prompt response to foreign invaders (Mongols, Japanese pirates, etc.), as they could be climbed easily by the defenders, and to reduce the construction period of mountain fortresses on land (built for scorched earth tactics) and of bastions in island areas. Thus, it can be said that this was a result of Goryeo’s long struggle against the Mongols, during which Goryeo moved people to fortifications on islands and rugged mountains. Later, after the construction of walled towns became standardized in the early Joseon period, terraced inner walls were built almost continuously at Yeongjinboseong Fortress throughout the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
