Abstract
This study was conducted to understand the construction method of the Second Wall of Dangseong Fortress in Hwaseong and to identify changes in its structure. The first construction of the second wall of Dangseong Fortress consisted of building a base stone row of 1-2 layers in most sections, followed by the construction of the main earthen wall. The main earthen wall showed a pattern of compacted earth layers bending downward toward the interior of the fortress, covering the inner base stone row. This is considered to be a method of constructing earthen walls that incorporates some elements of the rammed earth technique. On the west wall, part of the outer side of the main earthen wall was cut vertically, and then the outer base stone row was constructed and filled with compacted earth, which is one aspect of reconstruction. On the east wall, the inner base stone row was structured as a stone wall, and during the reconstruction process, the outer side of the main earthen wall was cut into an L-shape and then covered with earth or an additional stone outer wall was constructed, causing the outer base stone row to disappear. In addition, traces of stone rows and wooden poles mark were found in the direction of the width of the fortress wall in the base stone row of the east wall in the valley area, which seems to have served to distinguish the construction sections. In particular, numerous examples of reconstruction were found on the east wall, which is likely due to increased use of the area around the east wall, the geographical conditions of the valley, and the strengthening of defenses in response to external crises the late Goryeo Dynasty. Based on the construction method and changes in the second wall, it is believed that the second wall of Dangseong Fortress was first constructed in the late Unified Silla period, underwent major reconstruction around the time of the Later Three Kingdoms period, and was again reconstructed around the Goryeo Dynasty in response to invasions by the Mongols and Japanese pirates, with a focus on the east wall. As such, the long-term maintenance and management of the fortress walls serve as significant evidence reflecting the importance and role of Dangseong Fortress.
