Abstract
The foreign artifacts excavated from the shellmound of the Byeonhan-Gaya(弁韓-加耶) sites in the Nakdong River estuary region include those of Central Plains(中原) origin and South and West Asian origin. The Central Plains artifacts can be further divided into two categories based on their production and import routes. Coins and Han mirrors were manufactured and imported directly from the Central Plains, while belt hooks and stone weights for scales were produced locally by adopting the technology and culture of the Central Plains. These Central Plains artifacts were imported through trade with China based on tributary trade that passed through Lelang(樂浪) and utilized maritime routes along the West and South coasts. There is a strong possibility that the eye beads with inlay glass, which may have originated from Rome or West Asia, as well as the dog teeth artifacts from southern India [Maldives], were directly imported through the South China Sea trade network without passing through Lelang. The Byeonhan and Gaya regions in the Nakdonggang River estuary received cultural goods from the Central Plains through tributary trade via Lelang. At the same time, they also imported cultural items from West Asia and South Asia through the South China Sea trade network. In this way, they embraced a variety of cultural influences through multiple trade routes, pursuing a pluralistic culture.
