Abstract

Research on Goguryeo mural tombs has primarily focused on their chronology based on tomb structure and mural content. While some studies have examined the general characteristics of Goguryeo architecture by analyzing tomb structures and architectural elements depicted in the murals, there has been a lack of detailed research on specific aspects such as the shapes and jointing methods of individual stone materials used in tomb construction. This is largely due to the difficulty of examining stone processing methods from the exterior of the stone chambers and the limited access to the shapes of internal stones, even during excavations. However, as tombs can be viewed as a form of architecture, research into the shapes, processing, and jointing methods of their stone materials is essential. Therefore, this paper estimates the architectural elements found inside the tomb and the processing and joining methods of the stone materials used for tomb construction, using the case of Cheonwangjisin-chong. Based on this, it explains the construction process of Cheonwangjisin-chong and examines the meaning of the structural features identified during that process. Cheonwangjisin-chong is a Goguryeo Mural Tomb located in Bukchang-ri, Suncheon-si, Pyeongannam-do, and is a tomb consisting of back room, front room with side rooms, and hallway. The back room ceiling forms a dome which two octagonal vaults are combined, the center of the front room and the left side room are combined with a parallel ceiling, and the right room is a combination of a parallel ceiling and a triangular ceiling. Wooden architectural elements are identified inside the tomb. In the central space of the front room, three beams are hung, and a ‘⼈’-shaped dae-gong(臺⼯) is placed on top of it, and a so-ro(⼩櫨) with a support is placed on top of it to support the ceiling. In the passage from the center of the front room to the left room, a pillar was erected and a du-gong(⽃拱) was placed to support the beam, and in the passage to the right room, there was no pillar, only the du-gong(⽃拱) was installed to support the beam. In the back room a ‘⼈’-shaped dae-gong(臺⼯) was erected at an angle at the four corners of the wall. On the ceiling, a chum-cha(檐遮) extending in four directions was installed to support the ceiling stone. The back room ceiling of the Cheonwangjisin-chong can be seen as combining features of both pendentive and squinch domes, which are known for their structural stability. Structures such as du-gong(⽃拱) installed on the ceiling are presumed to have a functional and decorative role in balancing the weight of the ceiling stone, such as a Meong-eh stone(駕⽯) found on the ceiling of Seokguram. Cheonwangjisin-chong is identified as an early-mid 5th century. Given that the tomb’s internal architectural elements are expressed as a mixture of structures and paintings, it is believed to represent a transitional period in the evolution of Goguryeo’s expression of wooden architectural elements in stone tombs.
