Abstract

Wooden architectural heritage structures are inherently vulnerable to damage and surface changes caused by weathering, biological agents, and human-induced factors. Recent advances in deep learning-based techniques for structural damage detection and condition assessment have facilitated the development of automated diagnostic and monitoring systems for traditional architecture. However, in the cultural heritage domain, the limited availability of real damage cases and the scarcity of high-quality, publicly accessible image datasets pose significant challenges to the training and evaluation of deep learning models. To mitigate these constraints, this study constructs a dataset of damage images generated with generative AI (Stable Diffusion) for Korean wooden architectural heritage by extracting and curating textual and visual evidence from national heritage inspection and monitoring reports. We design hierarchical prompts that reflect representative damage types specific to structural components (e.g., pillars and roofs) and perform conditional image generation with Stable Diffusion trained in three configurations. The generated images are quantitatively evaluated using CLIP score, Inception Score (IS), and Fréchet Inception Distance (FID). By proposing a generative-AI-based approach to domain-specific data augmentation, this work broadens the potential application of artificial intelligence to the preservation and structural health monitoring of wooden cultural heritage structures.
