Abstract
The Hwangnyongsa nine-story wooden pagoda has attracted attention as one of the representative cultural and tourism heritages in Gyeongju, due to its historical significance, grandeur, and architectural mystery. However, there are still unresolved issues regarding its restoration. For example, the cubical rock on the central foundation stone raises questions about its purpose and identity. In this study, we examined the purpose of the large stone, resembling a cubic body, at the site of Hwangnyongsa nine-story wooden pagoda through detailed observation, dimension measurement, and on-site XRF spectrometer. Based on actual measurements and a review of the excavation report, the diameter of the original wooden central pillar was confirmed to be approximately 136cm. Iron oxides were detected in both the circular groove on the cubical rock and the furrow on the central foundation stone through XRF analysis. These evidences suggest that these structures are made from steel or cast iron materials. In conclusion, after the pagoda was destroyed by arson at the hands of the Mongol army, the reliquary was placed beneath a square pedestal for protection. To achieve this, drainage systems and iron nail holes were carefully carved into both the foundation stone and the pedestal. The pagoda’s significance is symbolized by an iron pillar, believed to have been part of the structure’s roof, which is positioned above the pedestal. It is further hypothesized that a roofed structure was constructed to shield the reliquary from rainwater and to secure the iron pillar.
