Abstract

Tanggeon is a traditional men’s headgear that was widely used from the Joseon Dynasty through the modern era and represents a representative example of horsehair craftsmanship. Although many Tanggeon are preserved in museums in Korea and abroad, previous studies have focused on interpretations from costume history and folklore, while scientific analyses and conservation case studies remain limited. This study aimed to examine the material characteristics and degradation of the Tanggeon and to perform conservation treatment based on these findings in order to preserve its value. The subject of this research was the Tanggeon attributed to the loyal subject Jo Ik-gyeom, housed at Manin Cemetery of Righteous Fighters. Fibers sampled from the artifact were compared with modern commercial horsehair through microscopic observation and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify their morphological characteristics, chemical composition, and microscopic damage. The analysis confirmed typical horsehair features but also revealed multiple degradation phenomena, including cuticle damage, cracks, and contamination presumed to be fungal mycelia. Conservation treatment was subsequently conducted, consisting of contaminant removal and shape restoration through controlled humidification. An internal support was fabricated and inserted to stabilize the artifact during storage and exhibition. By presenting in detail the process of scientific analysis and conservation treatment of the Tanggeon, this study provides a reference for the future conservation and management of Tanggeon as well as other cultural heritage objects made of horsehair.
