Abstract
This study aims to reassess the technological significance of jukbangryeom (竹防簾), a traditional stationary fishing structure preserved along Korea’s southern coast, by comparing its structural features with those of bangryeom (防簾). Previous studies have generally classified jukbangryeom as a subtype of eosal (漁箭) and treated it as structurally equivalent to bangryeom, thereby suggesting a unified genealogical lineage. In contrast, this study argues that bangryeom actually manifested in diverse forms, shaped by local natural and geographical conditions, and that jukbangryeom represents a uniquely standardized structure within this broader lineage—developed specifically under particular environmental constraints. To support this argument, both textual analysis and field surveys were conducted. Historical records such as the Gamdongeogijeonmaldeungnok(監董漁基顚末謄錄), Choryanghwagwanjido(草梁和館地圖), and UhaeEuibo(牛海異漁譜) were analyzed to reveal the structural and terminological diversity of bangryeom during the late Joseon dynasty. Fieldwork was carried out over nine visits from July 2023 to May 2025 in Sacheon, Namhae, Changwon, and Goseong, combining oral histories with aerial photograph analysis to examine various forms of bal(簾), the broader category to which these devices belong. Environmental factors such as current speed, direction, water depth, and tidal range were compared using data from the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency. Findings indicate that bangryeom should be understood not as a singular structure, but rather as a collective term for various regionally adapted fixed fishing devices. Among them, jukbangryeom was found to have developed a structurally fixed form only in areas such as the Jijoek Strait and Samcheonpo, where fast and consistent currents prevail. Characterized by standardized components such as baltong, halgaji, and seongcheon, jukbangryeom clearly differs from other types in the bangryeom family. This study challenges conventional narratives that classify jukbangryeom simply as a variant or successor of bangryeom. By empirically analyzing the structural and environmental diversity of devices grouped under the term bangryeom, it calls for a revision of the classification system within Korea’s traditional fishing technology. Furthermore, by applying the concept of the so-called bal-cultural zone proposed in previous research, this paper provides a new interpretive framework for understanding the regional development of traditional fishing gear.
