세계화 시대의 원불교 세계교화 방향 －원불교 100년 기념성업을 중심으로-

‘물질이 개벽되니 정신을 개벽하자’라는 개교 표어의 내용에서 의미하는 바와 같이 원불교는 세계화시대에 신자유주의의 물결에서 파생되고 있는 새로운 형태의 지배와 억압으로부터 인간존엄과 상생의 윤리를 일깨워 주는 종교의 기능과 역할을수행하고자 한다. 개교 100년을 앞두고 있는 원불교는 소태산 대종사의 일원주의 사상, 정산종사의삼동윤리의 정신 등의 교리를 배경으로 세계화시대의 세계교화를 향한 교단적인 노력이 행해지고 있다. 국내의 교화성장에 비하여 세계교화는 시작에 불과한 정도이지만, 개교 100년 기념성업을 통하여 세계교화를 향한 구체적인 방향을 설정하고 있다. 미국동부지역의 해외총부건설과 교서정역사업 확대도 그 방향 가운데 하나이다. 세계교화의 방향에서는 원불교문화의 고유성을 어떻게 유지하며, 개방할 것인가하는 문제와 원불교 교단내의 중요한 가치나 정서를 어떻게 보편화해갈 것인가 하는 부분에 대한 고민을 필요로 한다. 이 밖에 주요교리해석과 교학연구를 폭넓게 해가는 방향과 원불교 교법을 보편화하는 다양한 도구개발, 그리고 세계교화를 전략적으로 해갈 수 있는 정책적 보완 등의 노력들이 함께 해야 한다. 또한 원불교 교단의 양적인 교세성장에 한정되지 않고, 세계화 시대에 직면한 여러 가지 문제 상황들에 대해 공헌할 수 있는 종교적 성장과 미래교화를 위한 쉼 없는 교단적인 성찰이 세계교화방향의 가장 중요한 과제임에 분명하다.
Abstract
“With this Great Opening of matter, let there be a Great Opening of sprit” is the founding motto of Wonbuddhism. Along with this motto, Wonbuddhism aims to play the role of religion that facilitate people awakening their fundamental respect of fellow human beings and embodying the ethics of win-win relationship where a newer format of dominance and oppression emerge under the influence of New Liberalism. In preparation of the centennial anniversary, the order of Wonbuddhism has made various efforts for the global edification introducing and spreading the teachings of Master Sotaesan’s Ilwonism and the ethics of Triple Identity of Master Jeongsan. The expanding rate of global edification is meek compared to the domestic one. It is expected that more concrete directions and plans should be made in the centennial anniversary of the opening of Wonbuddhism. The Won Dharma Center in New York State will open in October, 2011. Also, the translation project of sacred books have been rigorously pursued, one of the major projects strengthening the global edification. One of the key issues in the global edification policy of Wonbuddhism is the way of keeping originality of the Wonbuddhist culture along the way of its door-opening to the world. Another issue that needs a serious consideration is how to generalize important values and culture of Wonbuddhism for the common folks. Other remaining tasks include the interpretation of doctrines, expanding of the Wonbuddhism study, developing various tools and methods for a convenient access to Wonbuddshim, and some policy making that would strategically supplement the global edification. Lastly, Wonbudhism should prioritize achieving its meaningful growth in which it can contribute solving the problems of the globalized era, by not just remaining being content of its growth in size and number. The other important task for the global edification lies in the order’s constant efforts in reflecting its edification projects and policies facing the future around the corner.
