Abstract

Won-Buddhism currently faces the end of the third period of the third generation and the beginning of the first period of the fourth generation, according to the Period of Foundation, which sets one generation as 36 years that consist of three periods of twelve years each. Therefore, evaluation of the third period of the third generation and planning for the first period of the fourth generation is actively taking place, and globalization of Won-Buddhist studies is one of the areas of discussion. Ten core goals have been designated, which will serve as the objectives and direction of the development of Won-Buddhist studies for the next twelve years. Hence, this research overviews the foundation and main- activities of the growth of Won-Buddhist Studies and analyzes the research results at home and abroad. In particular, this paper looks at the research results from abroad, which have not yet been organized, in order to diagnose the status-quo of globalization. Lastly, this paper presents the outlook and tasks of Won-Buddhist studies, focusing on the ten core goals of the globalization of Won-Buddhist studies. This requires the Won-Buddhist order’s policy-level aid towards research in Won- Buddhist Studies and continued revision of the Scripture’s translation. Furthermore, the establishment of research institutions in Won-Buddhist Studies is urgently required in order to foster international research, as well as active participation in global research activities through cooperation with research institutes related to Won-Buddhism at home and abroad.
